5 minute Jessie {trunk or treat}

5 minutes before the trunk or treat max told me she just HAD to be jessie.
not merida.
and i was like,
"but remeeeeeemmmmbbbbeeerrrrr? you said you wanted to be merida:)"
big encouraging smile on my face,
pointing the turquoise green merida costume
that is hanging on the back of the kitchen table chair.
and she was all,
"i just want to be jessie. i looooove jessie."
red sparkle boots already on,
hat sitting on top of her head.
sad little face,
yearning for her halloween trunk or treat dream costume of jessie.
and so i thought,
ok emily,
you can do this.
yellow paper, red pen, white shirt, jeans.
5 minutes later i had a jessie costume on max,
with a great big smile.
and i'm pretty sure my awesome 5 minute costume making skills
may have just set a standard i most definitely did not want to set.
but for now,
i will just relish in all of my awesome
5 minute costume making skills.
and in case there are halloween weather gods,
i'd like to ask them to
please let it be not too freezing on halloween.
thank you.
love, emily
with an E.

richard gere is here.

{chase calls him "papa"}
...
grumpa's here.
we're doing lots of this.
he'll probably go home and sleep for a week.
hot chocolate shop in the mornings.
grilling for us at night.
making sure chase has the driest bum this side of the mississippi,
playing toys with max,
wearing witch hats around the house,
and being dragged by chase by the finger from one room to the next
all
day
long.
fixing lightbulbs,
cleaning my mircowave and such.
just a few of the exciting things happening
at my house until tuesday morning.
GLORY BE!!!
it must be almost halloween:)

if only the slide had more sacks {cornbelly's}

5 hours later,
we finally decided
to call it a day.
thank you cornbelly's for your good graces to us another year in a row.
max especially appreciated the cow's name she picked having her name,
spelling and everything.
which we didn't figure out until halfway through the ride.
chase could have played in the rocks all day and been a happy man,
and brennan wanted to stay at the slide with the potato sacks the entire time.
except, i wish it had more sacks.
population control.
psh.
i ate the most amazing hand dipped corndog,
roasted corn on the cob,
homemade curly fries,
and fresh squeeze lemonade of my entire life.
if i close my eyes right this very minute
i can almost imagine the first bite of that corn dog all over again.
MFEO.
PIG RACES.
PIGS
PIGS
PIGS
PIGS
that's what chase kept saying.
he didn't move an inch while the piggies went round and round.
until brennan decided to sit in his lap.
and then he started putting rocks down brennan's back.
served him right.
that's what i said.
the corn stalks made me feel like i was in a halloween fall dreamland,
and i kept looking over my shoulder for the cold air coming in.
but it just never came.
goodbye warm weather.
you were good to us.

but mostly, texting.

sometimes when my phone rings,
i think about how i want to answer it.
but i know that if i do,
they will know.
they will know,
and they will find me!
and sometimes it's like this dare i have with them.
or me.
like,
i'm going to answer this call.
take a deep breath.
i double dog dare you to answer this call!
do it
do it
do it
do it
DO IT!
sometimes i'll try to bribe them.
you know,
"if you can go outside until i'm off the phone i'll give you 2 oreos!
halloween oreos!
or a pony!"
ok, i would never really promise a pony,
but in my heart i want to.
anything to answer this one call!
and then i dare them.
like,
"i dare you to stay outside the entire 2 minutes i am on the phone with _____."
and usually that just doesn't work.
actually, it's never worked.
and most of the time i end up with
two monkeys wrapped around each leg,
and another monkey crying.
and i stand there thinking to myself,
welp, this is what you get for answering your phone emily.
you know, when i answer my phone with my children awake,
against my better judgement.
and it think,
"this is funny!"
like legititmately funny.
Doc Holliday from tombstone bonefied funny.
except without the boots and dying in the hospital.
you know, more like laying in the bed and you can't move,
because you just can't move,
and it's just funny.
wait, it was funny because he DID NOT have his boots on.
that's right.
forget about the boots.
usually why it's most funny is because i picture them all grown up,
hanging onto each of my legs,
another one crying,
in their adult grown up selves,
and then i start thinking about how it would really make a good saturday night live skit.
like flies on meat;)
every time.
and there's just no escaping it.
and so i usually have to get off of the phone,
and i'm just standing there laughing.
hugging someone up who is crying,
breaking up world war 3,
or helping max talk through whatever someone has done to offend her 3 1/2 year old self.
{note: i have found that it is really hard to be a 3 1/2 year old girl.
lots of upsetting things to get through in a day.}
and then i end up walking through the house the rest of the day
finding what kept them quiet for the first 30 seconds i was on the phone.
like silverware towers,
and toilet paper escapades in the bathroom.

and i think about how much
i love these tiny little humans.
and i even though i'm exhausted at the end of every day,
i love how alive my house is with them in it.
and then i think about how grateful i am for texting.
and my washer and dryer.
and my dishwasher.
but mostly, texting:)

best secret keeper i know {thursdays}

on thursdays, while max and brennan are in school,
chase and i get all of our MOST SECRET shopping done.
because he is my very best secret keeper:)
target clearance is my favorite way to christmas shop.
$50 switch and go dinos for $7.54.
i was jumping up and down and screaming in the aisle next to the bikes where we found them.
good thing chase was the only one that saw.

"i wish i was batman." -brennan {THE CATS}

-friday october 18th, 2013-
looking up at the stars in the hot tub our last night,
brennan closed his eyes as tightly as he could,
and with all of his 5 year old might he whispered,
"i wish i was batman."
and then he opened his eyes,
thinking none of us had heard.
with a secret in his smile.
you know,
the kind where you are the only one on the planet
that knows what you're thinking right at that very moment.
and you're just so excited to know what you know,
that you can't help but smile it to everyone around you.
because it's just so so good of a secret to have with yourself.
except we all knew,
but he didn't think we knew.
top 5 brennan moments of his entire life.
check.

and then came the on board entertainment...
dancing cats.

sean: "brennan, what was your favorite part of the train?"
brennan: "THE CATS."
and then we all had a good hard laugh.
because it just wasn't what we had expected him to say.
and then we hot tubbed until after 10,
and put the kids to bed late.
and of course everyone still woke up before 8,
but it was so totally worth it;)
THE END.
